the lap dog

i love dogs. i love cuddling, i love playing. i love how they don't get annoyed with me (i tend to annoy cats).
raynor is my fave. she loves to play, but around the same time every night she crawls on the couch, pushes herself against me and cuddles.
and steals my blanket. she took the wrong lesson from dora the explorer - she saw swiper swiping and though 'hm..i could do that.'
so she gets the blankies. and my lap. or at least part of it.

why adopt?

i've adopted 3 of my 4 animals - one of them was a petsmart pig who just needed my love and i knew it. and i've got to say it's really the best thing you can do.
first, adopting gives a chance to dogs that don't have a lot of exposure. in pet stores, rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats - they are seen everyday and often purchased quite quickly. i never see a guinea pig stay in a pet smart for more than a week.
second, going along with that, adopting doesn't give money directly to puppy mills, but to people trying to help the animals.
third, because the people are trying to help, the animals often or almost always come spayed and neutered and with their shots.
fourth, you are helping an animal that does not have a home, and has a high chance of not finding one.
fifth, you can find so many adoptable animals. from mixed breeds to pure breds - there are all sorts of dogs that need love in shelters.
sixth, not all, or many of these pets, are anti social or bad. many animals are just turned over because owners decide they no longer want the pet.
seventh, you have a lot of choice. and often times, it's cheaper. also, a lot of shelters let you meet with the dog. most pet stores or puppy mills, you are coming to purchase right there.
eighth, variety. kind of similar to the fifth reason, but go into a shelter and you can meet tons of different pets. it lets you see the difference between the lazy basset and the jumping terrier to the noming rabbit and staring cat.
ninth, you'll probably being saving that pets life. breeders are not going to kill that pet if you don't take it, but many shelters HAVE to.
tenth, it feels great. and the pet knows it. it feels good to help, and adopting a pet is so helpful.

but then again, there are so many reasons not to adopt.
a pet is a huge requirement, and adoption agencies aren't afraid to tell you this. fortunately, most rescues and shelters have an application and they will let you know if they do not think you or your circumstance is appropriate for a pet.
no matter what - do a lot of research. pets are far from free. and you never know what is going to happen. you have to be able to anticipate costs that you don't expect - and be able to fund them.

here are some good resources i found for dogs and pets with adopting.
petfinder.com -- not only good for finding your perfect pet, but a LOT of great resources.
the spca in your area -- lots of pets, training classes, etc. we looked a a few VERY sweet dogs in our local spca.
how much will a dog cost, cost of owning a dog, cost of owning a cat, cost of owning cats, and in general peteducation.com have a lot of info on costs and needs of a pet. some are things you may not have really thought about!
also - be sure to look up your breed and animal in general. the CFA and AKC can be really helpful for cats and dogs. i found and guinea pig cages to be so useful when i got poko. google also. use google. google is your best friend.

adopting is really great - you help out animals and in addition yourself. animals can bring so much joy to your life - just make sure to treat them right!
